Hi Perry,
Before reading this book I asked myself, “What do I want do and how do I get there?” This book answered a lot of those questions. Very informative and a great starting point. I’d highly recommend. Great job!

27 days agoHi, Perry,
Read you e-book “how to launch your own beauty product”. This is the best e-book regarding how to start a cosmetic line I have ever read. A lot of details and advise. I’m sure I would have to read it again and again while I’m developing my product. I’m very grateful for all the effort and time you put into this book.
I’m a Chinese and have lived in US for the past 17 years. I’m preparing myself for launching my own cosmetic company in China, of course taking the advantage of fast growing economy and my Chinese culture and language skill.
I have medical background (including biology and some chemistry, mostly inorganic biochemistry). But my whole family is “chemical” (my dad, brother and sister in-law are all chemists). I know I’m a production guy, not a sales person, kind of shy in public. I know cosmetics is a risky and complicated business but your book and website (questions and answers) has helped me to prepare myself for this challenge, especially the marketing side of it.
So thank you.P.S. I have a question for you. In the production line, is there a process to sterilize the cosmetic containers or it is not necessary? I couldn’t find any information on that.

A much appreciated offering!

I got an email for a comment – here it is!!
I wish i read this last year! Find the information most excellent. I had people push me to start my own thing years ago and started researching (i am a research nerd…lol) Then started formulating, getting together a brand, idea and website. Thankfully, my used to be sis in law was a designer and exchanged her time for product. I started testing each product myself for about a year and then got a small loan of two thousand dollars from my uncle and used to be mom in law and launched at a night market in August of 2012. I did the Christmas scene with success. I have a half written business plan and a lot of ideas for the future. i wake up early everyday to work on this as I am a single mom of four kidlets. Independent mom (single mom carries a branding) I am extremely passionate about the industry. I worked in film for four years as a make-up artist and became a massage practitioner, all which are good bases, i feel, for the industry. i have had excellent feedback on my product and have partnered with a magazine to do contest promotions. i am always moving forward….until yesterday!!!
I loved the information this report had – loved it…then realized. Crap., js much more work and realistically, how much can I do on my own. Realistically, can you really compete out there. i feel that i have some great differences in my company, but now am really reassessing after reading the report.
Question: where do you find a partner? Not an easy answer i would assume.
Best place to get liability insurance?
Also, I talked to Health Canada and they want notification of my products which is totally fine, but i haven’t seen it mentioned (again, totally fine)To sum this rant up – I loved the report, even though I am feeling overwhelmed. it’s hard to find information out there – so thank you

52 days agoDear Perry
As I read “How to Launch Your Cosmetic Line Report”, it pointed out all the things that you need to consider from Testing your formulas to defining your target market, the look and the feel of your products to the logistics of to getting the final product on the shelf. Then the report goes further on how to get the product sold and having return customers. “Bugger”, I just wanted to lock myself away in my Lab and design beautiful skincare products. The theory “Make it and they will come” will not work in this industry. Due to this report I have taken time out from the lab and started planning, formulating and writing my business model. To anyone that wants to launch their own Cosmetic Line this report is not only a must to read but an action plan to ensure the success of your cosmetic line. Thanks heaps, you have done it again Perry Romanowski. Great Report. -

54 days agoGood report and very informative. It gave me a place to aim my energy.
Having owned two jewelry stores that were very successful I have an idea about how to start a business from scratch. I also know that the banks did not lend us money when we started because we had no track record. After 7 years they all came knocking to lend us money we no longer needed. Now retired after 25 years I am looking at starting again. Best bet for me is to start small and grow slow remembering that the cosmetics business is complicated.
This article reminded me that you can’t do it all nor should you try. Now I have to consider do I want to stay in the lab or go out and sell. I love both! But, realistically I am a born sales person and only a kitchen chemist.
Thanks for such an insightful and thought full book. Love the work you do here the true voice of reason!

Question: Do you have to be a cosmetic scientist/chemist/etc to make the cosmetics? Cant you have people do it for you? If you do, how much will that cost? And how much does marketing, and all that cost?-

117 days agoHello Ashely – No you do not have to be a scientist to run your own cosmetic line. Yes, you can hire chemists to make the product for you. Costs will vary but a few thousand dollars per formula. Marketing costs as much or as little as you want.

210 days agoTo be frank the report was very clear and it was straight to the point but still I have few questions about the product development phase. We are a totally young new startup with a strong passion to create our own brand. Our mission is to provide 100% natural products to the customer. I have browsed through various private labelled manufacturers who ‘call’ themselves as natural cosmetic manufacturers but are really not. They at least use chemicals for preservative. I’m looking whether to startup a retail shop with natural products and save capital for R&D and formulate 100% natural products or keep looking for 100% natural private label manufacturers . Some website for reference would add value to the report

393 days agoThanks for the guidance. I listened twice and took notes. Launching a cosmetic line is an overwhelming task. It’s just hard to keep all of the plates spinning! If a person is trying to do this alone, they will most likely only be able to focus on the product and not on the marketing. A good case for considering contract manufacturing was made in this podcast.

I will keep this report saved on my computer and hopefully use it sometimes in future.

424 days agoThanks for the copy of the How to Start a Cosmetic Line report. I can’t believe it took me so long to actually get around to reading your report, but once I started I read the whole thing cover to cover.
Now I’ll offer comment:
What I really liked was the comprehensive nature of the report, from Logo selection all the way to to Facebook marketing.
However, I agree with Florina that more information and resources are needed. For the 2nd edition of the report it would a good idea to include internet links to recommended testing firms, small batch contract manufacturers, packaging & design companies, claims substantiation resources, and insurance.
After 15 years in the industry I hope to keep this career for the rest of my life, but I frequently wonder what I will do when I retire… If it involves starting my own business, then I think I ought to start thinking about it sooner rather than later! -
Thank you so much for the report. This is such an awesome free resource. Kudos to you!!!!

Florina Tudor
437 days agoHello
I have read it some time ago. I didn’t review it because there was simply nothing there that I didn’t know already. It is well written, but I would have expected more from it.
List some websites of testing labs or list some websites who aggregate info about testing labs.
A more in depth analysis of claims, with examples, would also be nice. For one thing in USA are not permitted claims that would be ok in EU.
I didn’t see anything about insurance. INSURANCE IS A MUST in this business. I cannot stress enough how badly we need insurance. Now some advice for anyone who is thinking to start a business.
Plan long term. You cannot take a lotion on the market in less than 3 months and it takes 12 to 18 months or more for small companies to come up with a ready-for-the-market product, depending on the complexity of the formulation.
Let’s say you have a formulation ready.
The first thing to test is the preservative system. Challenge tests are expensive though. Some years ago they were not required in USA, they are/were required in EU.
But some tests need to be done. So do look at the price and shop around for labs. Don’t start with more products than you can afford to test. The next thing is time. It should be able to age gracefully so to speak:
- maintain properties at least 3 months at 18 degrees Celsius in both opened and unopened bottle (or jar or whatever).
- maintain properties for at least 3 freeze / defreeze cycles
I would add that some formulations which pass these tests will still fail in real life conditions, think a warm, humid and germ rich bathroom environment. And a customer that will wash their hands most of the times, but not all of the times and not thoroughly. So you need to account for that as well.
These issues are mighty important when it comes to customer retention. Customers will use and abuse your products and still expect them to perform flawlessly. If the products do not perform what is perceived as the most basic attribute – maintain its state in time, you have lost a customer. When this happen, it does not matter how great the product is in terms of efficacy for any given purpose. The product that fails to maintain its state will be perceived as a possible threat to health, as an example of careless formulation etcYou can easily see that in even if left untouched your lotion may separate after a month or two. And then you’re back to your lab or your kitchen, as the case may be, to try to add or remove ingredients that will have an effect on stability. This cycle can repeat itself any number of times, so you need to plan long term.
Remember that INSURANCE IS A MUST
If I would start from scratch and with very little money I would start by selling products that will not spoil easily: massage oils with a hefty dose of vitamin E to prevent rancidity and you’re in business.
Pack them in real dark glass bottles with aluminium pumps (for convenience) and earth-tones colored labels. It looks and feels luxurious and doesn’t cost much. Its perceived price/benefits rapport is almost off the charts (in a good way) for many categories of consumers.
You have a winner in almost any market.
I know it’s cliche, but your company is new, nobody knows you and you need to appeal to something your prospective customers are likely to react to.
So: simple formulation, luxury packaging, cliche look => the easiest way to get a rapid return on investment when you start with very little cash. And this is return on investment in both cash and brand awareness.
Of course this is only an example, and not everybody agrees with my way of seeing things. The next issue is label claims.
Negative claims, meaningless as they are for any professional, cost nothing and are very appealing to certain groups. Let’s take “paraben free” or “SLS free”. This label claim suggests that a formulation without parabens is somehow superior to a formulation that contains parabens as preservatives. This type of claims, though I am very much against them, will sell a product. A decent product, one that does absolutely nothing more and nothing less than what it’s supposed to do by definition, will greatly benefit from negative claims.Another thing is that if you don’t want to go the route of negative claims, you can also make claims that really mean nothing, cost nothing in terms of money, and are still appealing: “enriched with……….” works every time. Of course, there are consumers who do read the labels and can tell when someone is trying too hard. Like one body lotion I found in a supermarket here in France . The shea butter was there all right, in between preservatives and fragrance. This type of label claim is, from my point of view, a very bad idea and can ruin the reputation of a certain company, of a whole line of products, and the cosmetics industry as a whole. But it does work with some clients and it doesn’t cost a penny.
Why do I mention these type of claims here? Because they can replace the paid-for label claims. It would cost a small or a large fortune to add to a line of products “anti-age”, “dermatologically tested” etc
This type of claims and the tests needed to back them will eat up even a hefty budget. So do shop around and postpone this untill you know you have a formulation that sells.
Example: “Ceramide face cream. Feel the benefits of … (whatever)”. If this face cream is a seller, then you can go on and test it to add some paid-for label claims. “Dermatologically tested” would be a good step.
So now you have “Ceramide face cream. Now dermatologically tested and approved! Feel the benefits of … (whatever)”
It all comes down to your budget and how to strech a small amount of money to be able to remain in business.Best of luck everybody! And remember that INSURANCE IS A MUST.

438 days agoHi, I have just read your report. It is all very relevant for me as I am in the process of going from making formulas at home to using a contract manufacturer and going nationwide.
The marketing and customer profile sections were fantastic. Keep up the good work. I regularly follow your website. Looking forward to more great reports in the future. -

438 days agoI read the entire report, but to be perfectly honest, there was nothing new here for me.
I had hoped for more. Obviously, you won’t be publishing MY comments, so I don’t know why I am bothering.-

438 days agoOf course I would publish your comments. We want to create material that is useful for people so your comments help provide good direction. What did you want covered in more detail?

Dear Perry
Thank you very much for all the valuable Chemist Conner e-mails. I’m a serial Entrepreneur. With regards to developing my own brand cosmetic product, I tick all your above bullet points, and more; though my Trade Mark Lawyers took me for a very expensive ride, and I’m still licking my sore wounds. I developed a natural formulation 3 years in my kitchen, which works perfectly; and started giving it away to family and friends, and when they started requesting more and in large quantities, I started charging, and word spread around fast, and I started receiving orders from outside the UK. I registered the company, website, and decided to register some patents, prior to finding a UK based formulation chemist, who will help me take the development from my kitchen to the market. My greatest mistake was going on the internet to find a Trade Mark Lawyer. instead of asking referrals from family members, friends, business associates, or professional clubs I belong too. Though my bank balance is lighter, with no patents to show for it; I’m still determine to take my fantastic formulation to the market. I need help in locating a London or UK based formulation Chemist, who can help with shelf live, testing, etc.
Kind regards
Hilda -

You know I’ll take it, even though I’ve started. There is still a lot I need to learn about business and marketing, then you stack new products on there and making sure everything is done well and to spec and you are overwhelmed pretty fast. Anything to help would be heavenly.

463 days agoThank Nancy. It’s my hope that this report gives people a complete understanding of what’s involved in a cosmetic product launch and the class will be completely focused on making it happen.
